A social media post by the Congress party’s Bihar unit has stirred a major political row after it linked the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with the state’s traditional bidi industry. The post, which highlighted the impact of GST on small bidi workers, was criticized by rival parties who accused Congress of belittling Bihar’s identity.
Opposition leaders argued that the choice of words in the post was inappropriate and “crossed the line,” sparking outrage across political circles. Several leaders from the ruling alliance in Bihar demanded an apology, saying the Congress had insulted the people of the state for political gain.
Congress, however, defended the post, stating that the intention was not to insult but to draw attention to the plight of thousands of bidi workers who are struggling under the burden of high taxes. Party leaders emphasized that the GST has disproportionately hurt small industries and the livelihoods of marginalized communities.
The row has quickly escalated with heated exchanges between political parties. Analysts suggest that such controversies could deepen tensions ahead of upcoming electoral campaigns in the state.
While the debate continues, the issue has once again put a spotlight on the larger discussion about GST and its impact on small-scale industries across India.
