China’s Foreign Minister to Skip BRICS Meet in Delhi, No Senior Replacement Named

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - China’s decision to skip the upcoming BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi has drawn attention amid evolving geopolitical tensions and ongoing diplomatic recalibrations within the bloc. Beijing confirmed that Foreign Minister Wang Yi would not attend the high-level meeting, citing “scheduling reasons,” while also indicating that no other senior Chinese official would replace him at the event. The move comes at a time when BRICS nations are attempting to strengthen coordination on trade, security, and global governance issues amid growing global uncertainty.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi’s absence is linked to prior commitments and scheduling conflicts, though officials did not provide additional details regarding the decision. Diplomatic observers noted that China’s choice not to send an alternative high ranking representative is unusual given the importance of BRICS meetings, particularly as India currently plays a major coordinating role within the grouping. The meeting in New Delhi is expected to focus on economic cooperation, expansion of the BRICS framework, regional conflicts, energy security, and reforms in global financial institutions. Analysts say Beijing’s reduced participation may reflect broader strategic calculations tied to its complex relations with India, ongoing tensions in the Indo-Pacific, and increasing competition with Western powers.

The absence also comes during a period of heightened diplomatic activity involving China across multiple international forums, including trade discussions with the United States and regional security engagements in Asia. Despite Wang Yi’s non attendance, Chinese officials stressed that Beijing remains committed to BRICS cooperation and multilateral dialogue. Experts believe the move is unlikely to significantly weaken the bloc but could affect the optics of unity at a time when BRICS is seeking greater global influence and presenting itself as an alternative platform to Western led institutions.

While China has described the decision as purely logistical, Wang Yi’s absence from the Delhi meeting is expected to fuel speculation about broader geopolitical dynamics within BRICS and the region. Even so, member nations are likely to continue pushing for stronger economic and strategic cooperation as the bloc expands its global ambitions amid an increasingly multipolar world order.
