Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Ten days after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on April 26, 1986, Ukraine's Reactor 4 faced a second apocalyptic threat: radioactive water pooling beneath the ruined core threatened a steam explosion 2-3 times worse than Hiroshima. Three plant engineers Alexei Ananenko, Valeri Bezpalov, and Boris Baranov volunteered for a suicide mission, diving into pitch black, lethally irradiated basements to manually open critical drain valves.

Wearing only wetsuits, respirators, and headlamps with dosimeters, the trio navigated flooded corridors where radiation levels hit 20,000 roentgens per hour lethal within minutes. Ananenko, familiar with the layout, led them to the valves submerged in corium contaminated water; Bezpalov and Baranov assisted amid corrosive sludge and steam. Working frantically, they turned the stuck mechanisms, draining 20,000 tons of water from the steam separator bubbler pools and averting a meltdown that could have made much of Europe uninhabitable. Contrary to HBO dramatization, all three survived their initial doses (though Baranov died in 2005 from heart issues).
