Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - CBSE has clarified that students currently in Classes 7, 8 and 9 who have already chosen two foreign languages can continue with the same combination till Class 10. The current Class 10 batch will not be affected by the new language policy.
The clarification comes after confusion over CBSE’s earlier three-language circular, which had said that students entering Class 9 from the 2026–27 academic session must study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later said the rule would apply only to students entering Class 6 this year and would not be imposed retrospectively on those already in Classes 7, 8 and 9. That means students already studying two foreign languages will not have to abruptly switch midway through schooling.
Under the revised understanding, schools can continue the existing combinations for these students until they complete Class 10, and the third language requirement will be assessed by the school rather than through a CBSE board exam in Class 10. For new Class 6 entrants, however, the three-language structure under NEP 2020 will apply as they move up the classes. Reports said the clarification was meant to remove uncertainty for families and schools after the earlier notice caused widespread concern.
The move effectively protects students already in the middle of their secondary schooling from a sudden language change. It also signals that CBSE’s new language framework will be introduced gradually, starting with younger cohorts rather than applying backwards.
