Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Located at the southernmost tip of India’s Great Nicobar Island, Great Nicobar has emerged as a focal point of both strategic planning and environmental debate. The Indian government is investing billions of dollars in a massive infrastructure project that includes a transshipment port, airport, power facilities, and urban development. Supporters argue that the island could play a role similar to the Strait of Hormuz in terms of strategic influence, helping India monitor critical maritime routes used by global trade and Chinese shipping.
Great Nicobar occupies a highly strategic position near the western entrance of the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest maritime corridors. A significant portion of China’s energy imports and commercial trade passes through these waters, making the region crucial to Beijing’s economic and security interests. Defence analysts believe enhanced Indian infrastructure and military capabilities on the island could improve surveillance, logistics, and naval reach across the eastern Indian Ocean, strengthening India's position in the broader Indo-Pacific competition with China.
However, the project has also generated intense criticism from environmental groups, scientists, and indigenous rights advocates. Critics warn that large-scale construction could damage fragile ecosystems, threaten biodiversity, and impact vulnerable tribal communities living on the island. They argue that the strategic benefits must be carefully balanced against long-term environmental and social costs. The debate has become a prominent example of the challenge many nations face when national security priorities intersect with conservation concerns.
Whether Great Nicobar ultimately becomes a strategic asset comparable to a maritime chokepoint remains uncertain. What is clear is that the island has become increasingly important in India’s Indo-Pacific strategy, while also raising difficult questions about sustainability, development, and the future of one of the country's most ecologically sensitive regions.
