Borno State, Nigeria — A major attack by Boko Haram militants has left more than 60 people dead in northeast Nigeria, according to officials and residents. The assault targeted Darul Jamal, a community in Borno where displaced families had only recently returned after years of conflict.
Witnesses reported that militants belonging to the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad (JAS) faction launched the attack late at night. Gunmen moved from house to house, shooting civilians and torching buildings. Survivors described a scene of chaos, with families fleeing into nearby forests for safety. Local authorities warned that the death toll may rise as search operations continue.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum visited the site and condemned the killings. He urged residents not to abandon their resettled homes and assured that security would be reinforced. Emergency relief, including food and medical aid, is being arranged for survivors.
Analysts say the JAS faction has intensified assaults on civilian populations, often targeting communities suspected of aiding rival groups or the Nigerian military. Despite years of counter-insurgency operations, the northeast remains one of the most unstable regions in the country.
The attack further worsens Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 2 million people displaced by insurgency and tens of thousands killed since 2009. Humanitarian agencies warn that ongoing violence threatens fragile resettlement efforts and deepens food insecurity in affected areas.
