Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Bangladesh is projected to marginally overtake India in per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the 2026 fiscal year, according to the latest World Economic Outlook report released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The data estimates Bangladesh's per capita income will reach $2,911, slightly edging out India’s projected $2,812. This shift marks the second time in recent years that Dhaka has outpaced its larger neighbor on this specific economic metric, signaling a significant milestone in the regional economic landscape.
The divergence is largely attributed to the differing impacts of population growth and historical economic shocks. While India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy in terms of total volume, its status as the most populous nation puts immense pressure on per capita averages. Conversely, Bangladesh has maintained steady growth trajectories and managed a more resilient recovery following the global pandemic. Analysts note that India’s sharper economic contraction during 2020-21 created a lower baseline, though the nation continues to expand its total economy, which is estimated at $4.1 trillion compared to Bangladesh’s $510 billion.
Despite the projected lead for Dhaka in 2026, the IMF suggests the trend may be temporary. Projections indicate that India will likely reclaim its lead in 2027, with an estimated per capita GDP of $3,074 compared to Bangladesh’s $3,048. Experts anticipate that India will maintain this advantage through at least 2031, driven by upwardly revised growth forecasts and cooling trade tensions. However, for the current fiscal cycle, the figures underscore Bangladesh’s successful positioning as a rising manufacturing and export hub in South Asia.
