Thousands of Australians participated in "March for Australia" anti-immigration rallies across the country on Sunday, drawing strong condemnation from the centre-left government. The government labelled the events as "far-right activism grounded in racism" and asserted they were linked to neo-Nazis. Senior minister Murray Watt stated the rallies aimed to "spread hate and divide our community".
Organisers of the march expressed concerns that "mass migration" was tearing at community bonds, and also highlighted issues such as culture, wages, housing, traffic, and crime. They sought to "demand an end to mass immigration".
Police deployed hundreds of officers, with Victoria Police declaring Melbourne's CBD a designated area due to fears some right-wing figures intended to "cause violence and mayhem". Reports indicated riot officers used pepper spray on demonstrators in Melbourne. Counter-rallies also took place, with the Refugee Action Coalition expressing "disgust and anger" at the far-right agenda. These protests occur amidst a rise in right-wing extremism and recent laws banning the Nazi salute and associated symbols.
