Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - WhatsApp has begun letting some users reserve usernames ahead of a wider rollout planned for later this year. The move opens the door to a handle rush, since people and businesses can lock in a preferred name before the full feature goes live.
The new system is designed to reduce reliance on phone numbers by letting users connect through a unique username instead. WhatsApp says the username feature is not the same as account registration, because a phone number is still needed to create and use an account. It also appears WhatsApp will not offer a public username directory, meaning someone will need to know the exact handle to start a chat. The reservation phase is being rolled out gradually, and eligible users will get an in-app notification when it becomes available in their region.
WhatsApp is also planning an optional username key, which adds another layer of privacy by requiring a code before first contact through a username. Businesses, creators and organizations may be able to claim usernames that match their Instagram or Facebook identities, helping them keep the same brand name across Meta’s apps. For users, the main takeaway is simple: if you want a specific handle, the best time to act is now, before the broader launch makes desirable names harder to get. The company says the actual messaging with usernames feature will arrive later this year as the rollout expands.
WhatsApp is not fully switching over yet, but the reservation stage has already started the scramble for names. Once the feature reaches everyone, usernames will make it easier to share contact details without revealing a phone number.
