Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - The scale of American military losses during the Iran war has come under renewed scrutiny after a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report revealed that at least 42 US aircraft were either destroyed or damaged during Operation Epic Fury, the large scale campaign launched against Iran earlier this year. The findings, compiled using Pentagon data, CENTCOM statements, and defense reports, suggest the air conflict may have been far more costly than publicly acknowledged by US officials. The report has intensified debate in Washington over military transparency, operational readiness, and the growing financial burden of the conflict.
According to our reports, the losses included some of America’s most advanced military assets such as four F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets, one F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter, one A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, seven KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelling planes, and one E-3 Sentry AWACS surveillance aircraft. The report also documented the loss or damage of two MC-130J Commando II aircraft, one HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter, 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones, and one MQ-4C Triton surveillance drone. Analysts estimated the total financial impact of the aircraft losses alone at nearly $2.6 billion, though lawmakers warned the actual figure could be significantly higher because some combat losses may still remain classified or unconfirmed. Military analysts noted that the large number of drone losses reflects Iran’s improved air defence and electronic warfare capabilities during the conflict. Several aircraft were reportedly shot down during combat missions over Iranian territory, while others were destroyed during rescue operations, retaliatory strikes, or attacks on US-linked bases in the Gulf region. One of the most closely watched incidents involved the downing of an American F-15E fighter jet over Iran in April, which triggered a massive US rescue mission involving more than 150 aircraft. The conflict also exposed vulnerabilities in US surveillance and refuelling operations, particularly after Iranian missile and drone attacks targeted military facilities across the region.
The newly released figures have intensified political and military debate in the United States over the true cost of the Iran war and the effectiveness of modern airpower in contested environments. While US officials maintain that Iran’s military capabilities were severely weakened during the campaign, the reported aircraft losses highlight the growing risks of high intensity warfare against technologically capable adversaries. Analysts believe the findings could influence future Pentagon strategy, drone warfare doctrine, and congressional oversight of military operations in the Middle East.
