Washington / Hong Kong, Aug 14 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to make efforts to secure the release of Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, who is currently on trial under the city’s national security law.
In a radio interview, Trump said he would “do everything” possible to help Lai, while acknowledging that such action may not be welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Lai, the 77-year-old founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, has been in detention since December 2020 on charges of colluding with foreign forces and publishing seditious material — allegations he denies.
Lai’s ongoing trial faced a temporary halt this week after he experienced heart palpitations during proceedings. The court has adjourned the case until Monday to allow medical treatment, including provision of medication and a heart monitor.
International rights groups and Western governments have repeatedly called for Lai’s release, citing concerns over press freedom, political repression, and his deteriorating health. The case remains a focal point in broader debates over Hong Kong’s autonomy and the use of the national security law.
