Super Typhoon Bavi makes landfall on US Pacific islands

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Super Typhoon Bavi has made landfall on Rota, the southernmost island in the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing hurricane-force winds and torrential rain to U.S. Pacific territories. Local authorities on Rota say they have received reports of major damages, as the storm lashes the island and nearby areas.

The National Weather Service said Bavi’s western eyewall moved over Rota with sustained winds around 180 mph, while forecasters warned of catastrophic wind damage, storm surge and dangerous surf. Officials said the storm could leave much of the island uninhabitable for weeks or longer, with many non-reinforced homes likely to suffer roof failure and wall collapse. Power outages, flooded roads and downed trees and poles were also expected across the region.

Residents in Guam and the Northern Marianas had been urged to shelter before the storm arrived, and emergency centers were opened as flights and port operations were suspended. On Rota, a spokesperson for the mayor said people were dealing with heavy winds and flooding, and that some had reported major damage. While officials have not yet confirmed casualties, the storm’s intensity and the scale of the damage have made it one of the most dangerous weather events to hit the islands in recent memory.

Bavi’s landfall has turned into a major emergency for the Northern Mariana Islands, especially Rota. With destructive winds, flooding and power outages still unfolding, authorities are now focused on immediate rescue, damage assessment and keeping residents safe.
