Desk Correspondent, New Delhi - A massive leadership shake-up could be on the cards in Indian cricket. Amid growing speculation over Suryakumar Yadav potentially losing the T20I captaincy, fresh reports now claim that Shubman Gill could also be removed as India’s ODI skipper. The reports suggest the BCCI is considering appointing a single captain for both white-ball formats, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the frontrunner for the role.
Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from Tests and T20Is, Indian cricket underwent a significant leadership transition. Suryakumar Yadav was handed the T20I captaincy, while Shubman Gill took charge of the ODI and Test sides. However, according to recent reports, the Indian team management is now evaluating the possibility of having one captain lead both the ODI and T20I teams. This development has put Shreyas Iyer firmly in contention to become India’s next white-ball captain ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Sources quoted in reports claimed that the BCCI is keen on balancing youth with experience and has been highly impressed with Iyer’s recent performances and leadership qualities.
His captaincy during IPL 2026 and his consistency across formats have reportedly strengthened his case for a bigger leadership role. At the same time, reports also suggest that Suryakumar Yadav may lose the T20I captaincy following a prolonged lean patch with the bat. While some reports have named Sanju Samson as another contender for the role due to his impressive T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, Shreyas Iyer is currently believed to be the leading candidate for the overall white-ball leadership setup. If the reports turn out to be true, Iyer could reportedly return to India’s T20I XI after more than two years and potentially captain the side during the upcoming series against Ireland and England.
Despite the intense speculation, sources close to the development have denied that any official discussion regarding the removal of Shubman Gill as ODI captain has taken place so far. Still, the reports have sparked major debate among fans as Indian cricket appears to be heading toward another significant transition phase. With the BCCI expected to announce the next T20I squad soon, all eyes are now on whether Shreyas Iyer will indeed emerge as India’s next all-format white-ball leader.
