Air travel in India has taken a major hit this year with 5,706 flight cancellations reported up to June 30. The government attributed the disruptions to a mix of geopolitical tensions, regulatory hurdles, and operational challenges faced by airlines.
According to official data, both domestic and international routes were affected, with several carriers struggling to maintain schedules. Issues such as global conflicts impacting fuel supply chains, regulatory restrictions in certain regions, and technical shortages within airlines have contributed to the high cancellation numbers.
Civil Aviation Ministry officials stated that measures are being taken to address the situation, including better coordination with airlines and regulatory bodies. They emphasized that passenger safety and compliance with global aviation norms remain the top priority.
Industry experts believe that while external factors have played a significant role, structural issues within the aviation sector—like manpower shortages and maintenance delays—have also added to the cancellations.
Passengers have raised concerns over last-minute flight changes and the lack of timely refunds. The ministry has assured that steps are being taken to strengthen consumer rights and improve grievance redressal mechanisms.
With the festive travel season approaching, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further large-scale disruptions.
