The opposition alliance INDIA bloc is preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, escalating its standoff with the Election Commission over alleged discrepancies in the voter list.
Leaders of the bloc have accused the poll body of failing to maintain transparency and fairness in updating electoral rolls. They argue that irregularities in the lists could undermine the democratic process, especially with elections drawing closer.
The opposition parties have decided to take a confrontational route, moving a motion in Parliament against the CEC. This rare step underscores the severity of their grievances and the pressure being mounted on the Election Commission.
While the bloc insists that the action is necessary to safeguard voter rights, the ruling NDA has dismissed the move as politically motivated. Government leaders argue that the commission functions independently and accused the opposition of trying to discredit institutions.
