Ananya Lohia , Mexico - Kylian Mbappe starred with a brilliant brace as France defeated Sweden 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, booking a place in the last 16 against Paraguay.

Mbappe opened the scoring just before half-time with a superb solo effort before adding his second in the 74th minute from a Michael Olise assist. The two goals took his tally to six in the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Mbappe, however, leads the standings on assists, having registered two so far.

The Real Madrid forward also set a new World Cup record by becoming the highest scorer in knockout matches with 10 goals, surpassing Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo. His overall World Cup tally now stands at 18 goals in 18 appearances, just one behind Messi's all-time total of 19.

After scoring his first goal, Mbappe celebrated by running to coach Didier Deschamps, who returned to the touchline after missing France's final group-stage match due to a family bereavement. France's convincing victory sends them into a Round of 16 clash against Paraguay as Mbappe continues his pursuit of both World Cup glory and the Golden Boot.
