Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Iran has confirmed it has not yet reached a final decision on a possible agreement with the United States, contradicting President Donald Trump's claim that a peace deal to end the three-month-old war could be signed within days. On Thursday, Trump withdrew his threat of further strikes against Iran and announced he had cancelled scheduled military bombardments, citing that talks with Iranian leadership had reached "the highest level" and received approval.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Thursday that reports regarding a finalized time and place for signing the agreement remain "purely conjectural," with nothing finalized so far . Baghaei emphasized that Iran will not compromise on its "red lines" during negotiations, noting that "from the beginning, the status of negotiations was clear to us, and a large portion of the text had already been finalised. However, the Americans kept changing their positions". He stressed that Iran has "proven that it does not compromise on what it has defined as its red lines" and confirmed unequivocally that "so far, Iran has not reached a final decision regarding any agreement".
President Trump announced on social media that he had "cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening," claiming discussions had been "brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved". During an Oval Office event, Trump stated the United States and Iran had come to an agreement "pending the finalization of documents," which could potentially be signed in Europe within the weekend, with Vice President JD Vance present at the ceremony. However, weeks of talks have failed to produce a concrete agreement so far, despite Trump's repeated claims that a deal is imminent.
The mixed messages from Washington and Tehran highlight the fragile nature of negotiations as the West Asia conflict continues. While Trump celebrates a potential breakthrough and cancels military strikes, Iran maintains skepticism about the U.S. position and refuses to commit to any deal that doesn't protect its stated lines, leaving the path to peace uncertain.
