Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, India has reiterated its firm opposition to attacks on merchant shipping and called for the protection of international maritime routes. Speaking at the United Nations, India's Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, stressed that targeting commercial vessels and civilian crews is unacceptable and poses serious risks to global commerce and regional stability.

Addressing the international community, Parvathaneni highlighted the growing dangers facing commercial shipping in strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world's oil and gas supplies passes. He emphasized that attacks on merchant vessels threaten freedom of navigation, disrupt global supply chains, and undermine international law. India also urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and work toward a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.

India's concerns are particularly significant given its economic and energy interests in the Gulf region. The government noted that millions of Indians live and work across West Asia, while Indian trade and energy imports heavily depend on secure maritime routes. Officials warned that continued attacks on shipping could have far-reaching consequences for global markets and energy security. New Delhi has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy while emphasizing the safety of civilian seafarers and uninterrupted commercial navigation.
