Tel Aviv, August 18 — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday announced the launch of its ground invasion of Gaza City, marking what it described as the “last phase” of the ongoing war against Hamas.
In an official statement, IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin confirmed that troops had already begun operations aimed at “conquering Gaza City” and tightening military control in the region. The announcement signals an escalation in the nearly 22-month-long conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced large sections of the population.
“The State of Israel is not waiting,” Defrin said, adding that forces were advancing with the objective of dismantling Hamas’s infrastructure in urban strongholds. The declaration comes after weeks of intensified airstrikes, artillery fire, and cross-border skirmishes that have left parts of Gaza severely damaged.
Military analysts believe that the decision to move into Gaza City highlights Israel’s intent to deliver a decisive blow against Hamas leadership. However, humanitarian organisations have raised concerns about the safety of civilians trapped in the conflict zone, with international agencies urging restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement.
The IDF has not provided a timeline for the operation, but officials stressed that the offensive would continue until “security objectives are met.”
