Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Uttar Pradesh once again showcased its rich sporting legacy at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with distance runner Gulveer Singh emerging as the state's biggest star. The Army athlete created history by becoming the first Indian to win two athletics medals in a single Commonwealth Games edition.

Gulveer claimed silver in the men's 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m, continuing Uttar Pradesh's proud tradition of producing elite distance runners after Bahadur Prasad and Gulab Chand. His historic double earned praise from former international Gulab Chand, who said Gulveer's success would inspire a new generation of athletes in the state.

Uttar Pradesh also celebrated a gold medal through judoka Asmita Dey in the women's 48kg category. Although originally from Tripura, Dey represents Uttar Pradesh's sports setup and serves as a sub-inspector with the Uttar Pradesh Police. Meanwhile, athletes including Parul Chaudhary, Priyanka Goswami, Rohit Yadav and Shreyansh Trivedi delivered commendable performances but narrowly missed podium finishes.

The Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association hailed the state's athletes for their impressive performances despite limited infrastructure and expressed confidence that better coaching and training facilities could help the state's sportspersons achieve even greater success at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
