Germany, Netherlands Knocked Out in World Cup Shocks

Ananya Lohia , Mexico - Europe’s grip on the FIFA World Cup 2026 took a major hit as Germany and the Netherlands suffered stunning Round of 32 exits, losing penalty shootouts to Paraguay and Morocco respectively.

Germany were the first heavyweight to fall, going down 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Paraguay. Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead before Kai Havertz equalised, but despite dominating possession, Germany failed to find a winner. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill starred in the shootout, while Jose Canale converted the decisive penalty to send Paraguay into the Round of 16.

Later, Morocco produced another upset by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties. Cody Gakpo appeared to have sealed victory for the Dutch, but Issa Diop’s stoppage-time equaliser forced extra time. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then emerged as the hero in the shootout, saving a crucial penalty before Ismael Saibari converted the winning spot-kick.

The results highlighted the unpredictable nature of knockout football, proving that reputation alone offers no guarantees on the World Cup stage as Paraguay and Morocco joined the last 16 at the expense of two European giants.
