Delhi-Born Nikhil Chaudhary Makes Australia Debut, Ends 62-Year Wait

Ananya Lohia , Australia - Delhi-born all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary scripted a remarkable chapter in cricket history by becoming the first Indian-born male cricketer in 62 years to represent Australia. The 30-year-old made his international debut in the first T20I against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Chaudhary, 30, was drafted into Australia's squad as a replacement for Travis Head. Though he does not hold Australian citizenship, he qualified to represent the country under ICC eligibility rules after living in Australia for five years. His cricket journey took an unexpected turn during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was stranded in Queensland while visiting family due to border closures.

After playing district cricket and working odd jobs, Chaudhary earned a contract with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Strong performances over three seasons, including a title-winning campaign, paved the way for his maiden international call-up. He marked his debut with a catch to dismiss Bangladesh batter Soumya Sarkar and became only the third Indian-born cricketer to represent Australia internationally.

Chaudhary's debut marks the culmination of an extraordinary journey from Delhi's cricket circuit to Australia's international team. His rise from being stranded during the pandemic to earning a Baggy Green call-up is a testament to perseverance and determination.
