Canberra, August 26 – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has accused Iran of orchestrating two antisemitic attacks on Australian soil and announced the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador, marking the country's first such diplomatic action since World War II.
The attacks, which occurred in late 2024, targeted the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne and Lewis’ Continental Kitchen, a kosher restaurant in Sydney. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has reportedly found credible evidence linking the Iranian government, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), to these incidents. Prime Minister Albanese described the attacks as “extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression” and stated that Iran attempted to conceal its involvement.
In response, Australia is expelling Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other Iranian diplomats, giving them seven days to leave the country. Additionally, Australia is suspending operations at its embassy in Tehran and plans to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
The Jewish community in Australia has expressed outrage over the attacks, with leaders welcoming the government's actions. The Israeli embassy in Australia also praised the measures, affirming that Iran poses a broader global threat.
This diplomatic fallout follows prior tensions, including criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned Australia’s decision to recognize Palestine as a state, scheduled for formalization at the UN General Assembly.
The situation remains ongoing, with further developments expected.
