Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Meta has reportedly begun another major round of layoffs, with nearly 8,000 employees expected to lose their jobs as the company accelerates its artificial intelligence-driven restructuring. Several employees claimed they received termination emails as early as 4 AM, sparking criticism online over the company’s handling of the cuts. The move marks one of the biggest workforce shakeups at Meta since CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched the company’s “year of efficiency” strategy focused on AI investments and operational restructuring.
According to reports, employees across multiple departments including product operations, recruitment, marketing, and support teams were impacted by the layoffs. Many workers said they had recently been working remotely before suddenly receiving early-morning emails informing them that their roles had been eliminated. The company is reportedly redirecting resources toward generative AI, machine learning infrastructure, and automation technologies as competition intensifies across the tech industry. Meta executives have repeatedly emphasized that artificial intelligence will become central to the company’s future growth, particularly across products linked to social media, advertising, virtual reality, and digital assistants. The layoffs come amid a wider trend of AI-driven restructuring across major global tech firms, where companies are reducing traditional operational roles while increasing investments in automation and advanced AI systems. Analysts say Meta’s strategy reflects growing pressure among Silicon Valley giants to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI race led by companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic. While investors have largely welcomed Meta’s aggressive cost-cutting measures, the layoffs have reignited concerns about job security in the technology sector and the human impact of rapid AI adoption.
Meta’s latest layoffs highlight the growing transformation reshaping the global tech industry as companies increasingly prioritize artificial intelligence over traditional workforce expansion. While the company believes the shift will strengthen long term innovation and profitability, the sudden job cuts have once again fueled debate over how AI is changing the future of work across the corporate world.
