The unwavering strength of Colonel Meghna Dave

“We can overcome fear with preparation, knowledge, and action. We have to face our fears to know what comes next.”

These inspiring words belong to Colonel Meghna Dave, an officer in the Indian Army who has spent 23 years in service. Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, she was deeply inspired by her father, an Army officer in the Corps of Signals, whom she lost at the age of six. Though there were no women in service at the time, the sight of his uniform and photographs planted the dream of joining the Army in her heart. She joined the NCC during school and college, and her dedication paid off when she cleared the SSB exam on her first attempt during her final year of graduation. She holds a degree in Commerce and an MBA in Human Resources, with a specialisation in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. She credits her mother for being the strongest influence in her life, raising her and her sister with courage and independence, preparing her to thrive in a male-dominated environment.

An independent  woman with best vision and first woman to take command of ASC

Col Dave has commanded units in several parts of India and currently leads a Logistics and Transport Battalion in the challenging terrain of India’s Eastern sector. In 2023, she became the first woman to take command of an ASC unit in Sukna under the Eastern Command. Her team handles essential responsibilities such as maintaining and transporting food, fuel, and ammunition in tough mountainous and jungle areas. Life in the Army means working in extreme weather conditions—from freezing –25°C in the North to 45°C in the deserts of the West—but she believes soldiers are trained mentally and physically to face such challenges. Her own strength comes not just from training, but also from her children, who inspire her every day with their love and belief in her. Whenever fear creeps in, she reminds herself of their words: “Mama, you can do this.”

Personal setback of life, was taken as a stepping stone for professional career.

She believes that strength comes from readiness, knowledge, and professionalism. To be a good Army officer, one must stay updated, be physically fit, and mentally tough. Leading from the front and mentoring soldiers are among the most fulfilling parts of her job. Her message to young women across India is simple: dream big, stay focused, and work hard with discipline and dedication. Since the Indian Army opened its doors to women in non-medical roles in 1992, many like her have made their mark. On the 78th Independence Day, Femina honoured ten such women, including Col Meghna Dave, for their commitment to serving the nation and inspiring generations to come.

“Dedication, discipline, and hard work can help you achieve anything in life.”

Discipline, Determination and Devotion makes a person successful.
