Johns Hopkins University expert has addressed common myths about sunscreen, stressing the importance of proper use and awareness of skin cancer risks.
According to the expert, sunscreen does have an expiration date, and using it beyond that reduces its effectiveness in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. He also emphasized that sunscreen is not just for people with lighter skin tones—everyone, regardless of complexion, is vulnerable to sun damage and potential skin cancer.
The discussion highlighted the need for reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially when outdoors for extended periods. The expert further noted that people with a family history of skin cancer or those who spend long hours in direct sunlight should be more cautious.
Doctors advise that sunscreen should be a year-round habit, as UV rays can affect the skin even on cloudy days. Regular skin checks and timely medical consultation for unusual moles or spots are also recommended to reduce risks.
