Colonel Anshu Jamwal, a trailblazing officer hailing from Rahya village in Jammu & Kashmir, has carved her name in the annals of Indian military history by becoming the first woman to command an operational Air Defence Regiment of the Indian Army. Commissioned into the Corps of Army Air Defence on March 18, 2006, she has demonstrated unwavering commitment and remarkable courage in a career spanning nearly two decades. Her academic prowess, reflected in her Science degree from GCW Gandhinagar Jammu and a Master’s in Military Technology from Berhampur University, Odisha, laid the foundation for her exemplary journey in a field long considered a male bastion. Taking charge in July 2024, Colonel Jamwal's leadership in the strategically crucial Punjab region during Operation Sindoor stands as a testament to her strategic brilliance and resolute spirit.
A seasoned professional, Colonel Jamwal has donned many hats with poise and distinction, serving in a spectrum of operational, administrative, and instructional roles. As an instructor at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and the Air Defence College in Odisha, she mentored countless young officers, instilling in them the values of discipline, duty, and determination. Her exceptional service extended beyond national borders as well, with her role as a United Nations Military Observer in the Democratic Republic of Congo under MONUSCO earning her the prestigious UN Force Commander’s Citation. Her outstanding dedication and distinguished service have also been recognized with the Indian Army’s Commendation Card, making her a shining beacon of excellence and perseverance.
Colonel Jamwal’s journey is not only about military milestones but also about the triumph of a determined spirit over societal expectations. Despite her family’s initial wishes for her to pursue a teaching career, her resolve to chart an unconventional path won their admiration and pride. Her father, Mr. Bir Singh Jamwal, recalls with joy the early days of her preparation, counting her running laps at Gandhi Memorial Degree College in Jammu—a precursor to the marathons and boxing sessions that now keep her physically and mentally sharp. Today, as she commands her regiment with unflinching grit and grace, Colonel Anshu Jamwal stands as a symbol of courage, breaking barriers and inspiring generations to come.
