Supreme Court Directs Removal of Stray Dogs and Launch of Helpline

New Delhi, Aug 11 — The Supreme Court has ordered authorities to take immediate action to remove stray dogs from public places, citing public safety concerns. The directive comes after multiple petitions raised issues of dog attacks and lack of effective control measures in several states.

A bench of the court instructed municipal bodies and state administrations to carry out the removal in a humane manner, ensuring that animal welfare rules are followed. The court also directed the establishment of a dedicated helpline to allow citizens to report stray dog incidents quickly.

According to the order, the helpline must be operational round-the-clock and linked to local response teams for timely action. The court emphasised that public safety and humane treatment of animals must go hand in hand. Further hearings in the case are expected in the coming weeks.
