Opposition Leaders Stopped During Protest March Over SIR in Bihar
New Delhi – A large group of opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc staged a march on Monday from Parliament House to the Election Commission’s office, opposing the ongoing Special Investigation Report (SIR) process in Bihar. The demonstration, which saw participation from more than 300 lawmakers, included prominent figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sharad Pawar, and Sanjay Raut.
The protest aimed to highlight alleged irregularities and demand greater transparency in the SIR proceedings. However, Delhi Police intercepted the march near Transport Bhavan, citing security and traffic concerns. In a moment that drew public attention, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav jumped over a barricade to continue the march. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also briefly detained before being released.
INDIA bloc leaders accused the Election Commission of ignoring their grievances and called for urgent reforms to ensure impartial handling of electoral processes. They claimed that the SIR could influence political dynamics in Bihar ahead of upcoming elections.
The Delhi Police maintained that the action to halt the march was taken in accordance with security protocols. No major incidents of violence were reported, and the situation remained under control.
The INDIA bloc has indicated that further demonstrations may follow if their concerns remain unaddressed, keeping political tensions high in the capital.
