U.S. launches more strikes on Iran as standoff over Strait of Hormuz escalates

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - The latest escalation in the U.S.-Iran confrontation is being driven by renewed American strikes on Iranian military targets, including missile and air-defense systems and IRGC-linked boats, in an effort to curb attacks on commercial shipping. The clashes are unfolding alongside a worsening standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping remains under severe threat.

U.S. Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian surveillance and communications systems, air defenses, and other facilities that posed a threat to U.S. forces and international shipping. The action is part of a broader effort to weaken Iran’s ability to disrupt maritime traffic after a series of attacks and closures around Hormuz. That has made the strait, one of the world’s key energy chokepoints, even more volatile.

Iran has responded by tightening its posture around the strait and attacking vessels it says violated its rules, while also keeping the waterway effectively shut to commercial traffic. The result is a cycle of escalation: U.S. strikes, Iranian retaliation, more maritime attacks, and a growing risk that shipping, oil flows and regional security could all deteriorate further. Because Hormuz carries a major share of global oil and gas trade, even a short disruption can have outsized economic effects.

The renewed strikes show that the conflict has moved beyond isolated incidents and into a sustained contest over Hormuz and maritime control. Unless a ceasefire or shipping guarantees take hold soon, the standoff is likely to remain dangerous and could spread further across the Gulf.
