BCCI Clarifies on ODI Captaincy, Says Shubman Gill First Choice After Rohit Sharma

New Delhi, August 22 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put to rest speculationj surrounding India’s next ODI captain by clarifying that there has been “no discussion” regarding Shreyas Iyer taking over the role. Senior officials confirmed to Hindustan Times that Shubman Gill is the first-choice candidate to succeed Rohit Sharma, should a change in leadership be required.

Rumours had surfaced earlier this week suggesting that Iyer was being considered for the captaincy, especially after his strong performances in the middle order. However, the BCCI has dismissed those claims, calling them “baseless and misleading”.

“Shubman Gill is clearly seen as the natural successor to Rohit Sharma in the ODI format. He has been groomed for leadership and enjoys the confidence of the selectors and the team management,” a senior BCCI source told HT.

Gill, who has established himself as one of India’s most consistent top-order batters in recent years, is currently being viewed as part of the leadership group for the future. His temperament, batting form, and experience as vice-captain in limited stints have all contributed to his positioning as Rohit’s likely replacement.

The clarification comes ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, where Rohit is expected to lead the side. Cricket experts believe the BCCI’s statement is aimed at avoiding confusion and ensuring stability in the dressing room.
