The Jain community has begun observing Paryushan 2025, an eight-day festival dedicated to self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and forgiveness. Considered the most important period of the Jain calendar, the festival emphasizes fasting, prayer, and meditation as paths to inner purification.
Many devotees observe sattvic diets, abstaining from root vegetables, processed foods, and indulgences, instead focusing on simple preparations like khichdi, pulses, and fruit-based meals. Some undertake complete fasts, while others follow partial dietary restrictions. The practice is seen not only as a way to cleanse the body but also to cultivate compassion and non-violence.
Temples across Gujarat and Rajasthan are hosting special discourses and community gatherings, while digital platforms are broadcasting sermons for global followers. The highlight of the festival will be Samvatsari, the final day, when Jains seek forgiveness from one another with the phrase “Micchami Dukkadam” (may all the wrongs be forgiven).
Religious leaders note that in today’s fast-paced world, Paryushan offers a pause for reflection and ethical living. The festival’s growing visibility is also encouraging younger generations to reconnect with tradition through food, mindfulness, and faith.
