Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - Tension erupted at Baruipur Police Station on Thursday as residents of Fultala’s Netaji Nagar A-Block staged a protest demanding the immediate arrest of a married woman and her husband accused of blackmailing a young man, leading to his suicide. The deceased, Arunabh Haldar, a local resident, died on May 24 at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital after attempting suicide on May 22. According to family members, Haldar was allegedly trapped in a prolonged extramarital relationship with Rupa Das, who is married and has a child. Police have initiated an investigation, but the main accused couple remains at large.
The protest saw a large gathering of women and locals surrounding the police station, accusing the authorities of delay in arresting the suspects. Demonstrators claimed Rupa Das had previously been involved in similar incidents with other young men. In a dramatic turn, locals reportedly detained Rupa Das’s uncle and aunt, alleging they helped the couple flee, and handed them over to the police. Family members have filed a formal complaint at Baruipur Police Station, demanding a fair investigation and strict punishment for those responsible. The incident has sparked outrage in the neighbourhood, with residents demanding that the accused couple be barred from returning to the area. Police sources confirmed that a search is underway to locate Rupa Das and her husband.
A woman, speaking on behalf of the aggrieved family and locals, told reporters: “He was blackmailed... they took money from him. When he wanted to get out of the relationship, they mentally tortured him. This is not the first time she has done this with other boys.” She further demanded swift action, stating, “We want their immediate arrest and strict punishment. The police must ensure they do not return to our locality.” The protesters raised slogans calling for justice for the deceased and accountability from the authorities.
