Delhi is grappling with severe waterlogging and potential flooding after the Yamuna River breached its danger mark of 205.33 metres. The crisis was exacerbated by fresh showers that hit the national capital on Thursday morning, for which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning for light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across the Delhi-NCR region. The weather agency placed South and East Delhi on an orange alert and the rest of the capital on a yellow alert, forecasting a "generally cloudy sky" with more light rain expected throughout the day.
The overflowing river has inundated low-lying areas, forcing residents to evacuate to safer locations. Drone visuals have captured the extent of the chaos, showing floodwaters from the swollen Yamuna entering populated areas like the Monastery Market and Kashmere Gate, causing severe waterlogging. Key locations such as Vasudev Ghat and the area around Loha Pul are also heavily submerged by the floodwaters.
The heavy monsoon spell extends across the country. The IMD has issued a red alert for Gujarat, warning of "extremely heavy rainfall" at isolated places between September 4th and 6th. An orange alert is also in place for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Goa. The agency also predicts continued isolated heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand until September 9, with similar conditions expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, and several northeastern states.
