A devastating landslide at the Bahadurpur stone quarry in Birbhum district, West Bengal, on Friday afternoon, has tragically resulted in six deaths and left three workers seriously injured. The incident, reported to have occurred around 2 pm or 3 pm, happened when workers were engaged in drilling a rock surface for stone extraction. Witnesses reported that vibrations from a drilling machine likely triggered the collapse, trapping at least nine people under the debris.
Fellow quarry workers initiated immediate rescue operations, recovering six bodies and pulling out three injured individuals from under the rubble. The injured, one identified as Firoz Sheikh (30), were transported to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital. Hospital sources confirmed that the condition of the three injured is critical, with potential plans to shift them for advanced treatment if their condition stabilises.
Police from Nalhati station swiftly reached the site, and rescue efforts are continuing to ensure no other workers are trapped. Authorities are clearing debris and investigating the exact cause of the landslide. An additional district superintendent of police had earlier reported four fatalities and four injuries. Most of the victims are believed to be local residents.
