We Don’t Count Body Bags , Air Marshal Bharti , Col. Qureshi — Faces of Operation Sindoor Still Resonate a Year Later

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - A year after Operation Sindoor, the powerful voices and faces that defined India’s response to terror continue to resonate, with top military officials’ hard-hitting statements during the operation still echoing as a reminder of the country’s firm stance against terrorism.

Launched in May 2025 in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives, Operation Sindoor saw Indian armed forces strike multiple terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. As the operation unfolded, the nation closely followed routine press briefings conducted by key military officials, many of whom became the public faces of the mission. Among them were three women officers — Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh, and Prerna Deosthalee — whose composed and precise communication earned widespread recognition. Colonel Qureshi, a trailblazer who previously led India’s contingent at a multinational military exercise, stood out for her calm authority, while Wing Commander Singh, a seasoned helicopter pilot with over 2,500 flying hours, reinforced India’s strong message against terrorism during briefings.

Commander Deosthalee, who made history as the first woman to command an Indian Naval warship, also played a crucial role in conveying updates during the operation. Alongside them, senior officials including Rajiv Ghai, AK Bharti, and AN Pramod addressed the media with firm and often blunt responses. One of the most striking moments came when Air Marshal Bharti stated, “Our job is to hit the target, not to count the body bags,” underlining the military’s focus on precision over numbers. In another sharp remark, he dismissed speculation about strikes on Pakistan’s Hills, saying the forces had not targeted any such nuclear-linked site. Lieutenant General Ghai described the operation as “just the beginning,” while Vice Admiral Pramod highlighted how India’s precision strikes exposed and countered Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence narrative. The operation’s success, officials emphasised, was the result of coordinated efforts across the Army, Air Force, and Navy, backed by the courage of personnel on the ground.

One year on, Operation Sindoor is remembered not just for its military impact, but also for the clarity and confidence with which India communicated its actions to the world. The officers who led those briefings have since become enduring symbols of resolve, their words continuing to reflect a doctrine that signals zero tolerance for terrorism and unwavering national security priorities.
