Desk Correspondent , Mumbai - The mysterious deaths of four members of the Dokadia family in Mumbai's Pydhonie area took a new turn on Friday after police recovered a bottle of rat repellent from their residence, a day after a forensic report confirmed zinc phosphide poisoning as the cause. Abdulla Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen (35), and daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13) died after consuming watermelon on April 26. The Forensic Science Laboratory report, submitted on Thursday, detected lethal traces of the highly toxic zinc phosphide in the victims' viscera and the fruit remnants.
However, the recovered bottle does not list zinc phosphide among its ingredients, deepening the probe's complexities. JJ Marg police officials noted that the presence of rat poison is common in the old Mogul building due to rodent issues, but they are now investigating who specifically laced the watermelon with the deadly substance. Authorities have shifted from treating the cases as accidental deaths to exploring possibilities of murder or a suicide pact. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, questioning local pharmacists about rodenticide sales, and examining the family's financial situation, potential debts, and any known enemies.
The deaths had baffled investigators for nearly two weeks, with initial reports suggesting food poisoning. Police emphasized that zinc phosphide, commonly used in rat poisons, requires deliberate introduction. "We have started our investigation afresh," a senior officer said. Questions remain about the source of the specific toxin and the family's intent or external involvement. Forensic examination of the recovered bottle is underway as the search for answers continues in this tragic case.
