Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - As concerns mount over activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk's deteriorating health during his indefinite hunger strike, actor Vivek Oberoi has reacted to the issue, saying he is "an actor, not a politician," while stressing that every voice deserves to be heard in a healthy democracy.
Speaking at a recent event, Vivek Oberoi avoided taking a direct stand on Wangchuk's protest. He said he does not comment on political matters and prefers to observe and learn. However, he added that in a democratic country, people have the right to express their opinions and that such voices should be respected. Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike entered its 20th day on Friday.
Doctors monitoring his health said he remains "very weak" and is under round-the-clock medical supervision. According to the latest medical update, his weight has dropped to 57.15 kg, nearly 8.9 kg less than when he began his indefinite fast. Despite repeated appeals from political leaders, actors and supporters across the country, Wangchuk has refused to end his fast, urging people instead to question why the government has not initiated dialogue.
With Wangchuk's health continuing to deteriorate and legal proceedings underway, the protest has become a major national issue. Vivek Oberoi's comments have added another dimension to the debate, as calls for dialogue and a peaceful resolution continue to grow.
