Vegetable prices in Chandigarh have shot up sharply as recent floods and continuous rainfall disrupted supply chains from neighboring regions. Local markets reported that the cost of essentials like tomatoes, onions, and green vegetables has nearly doubled within a week.

Vendors said the rains damaged crops in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, leading to lower availability. Transportation has also been hit as waterlogged roads delayed trucks carrying fresh produce.

Residents expressed concern that household budgets are under pressure as prices of daily essentials keep climbing. “Tomatoes which were Rs 40 a kilo last week are now touching Rs 80,” said a shopper at Sector 26 market.

Traders warned that prices may remain high until weather conditions improve and fresh supplies reach the mandis. For now, families are forced to adjust purchases and cut down on quantities as the city grapples with inflation driven by nature’s fury.
