Ananya Lohia , Dambulla - Teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a brisk start but failed to convert it into a big score as India A faced Sri Lanka A in the opening match of the A Tri-Nation Series at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday.

The 15-year-old announced his arrival in style, striking boundaries off the first ball he faced and adding two more elegant fours through the off-side against Sri Lankan pacers. However, his promising innings was cut short when Mohamed Shiraz dismissed him for 14 off 12 deliveries. Attempting an aggressive shot down the ground, Sooryavanshi mistimed a full delivery from Shiraz, with Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige completing a superb diving catch at mid-off. Shiraz celebrated passionately after claiming the prized wicket, having earlier been struck for two boundaries by the youngster.

India A suffered another setback soon after as opener Prabhsimran Singh departed for just two runs, falling to Chamika Karunaratne. Earlier, India A captain Tilak Varma won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sooryavanshi entered the series with high expectations following a remarkable IPL 2026 campaign for Rajasthan Royals, where he emerged as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 776 runs and collected five awards. His performances earned him a place in India's squads for the T20I series against Ireland and England, making him the youngest player to receive a national call-up and surpassing a 36-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar. He has also been named in India's squad for the upcoming Asian Games.
