Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripted history on Saturday after being named in India's squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games. At just 15 years of age, the left-handed batter became the youngest player ever selected for India, surpassing the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at 16 in 1989.
Sooryavanshi earned the national call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, where he emerged as the tournament's highest run-scorer with 776 runs. The Rajasthan Royals star collected five major awards, including the Orange Cap, Super Striker award, and Most Valuable Player honour. He also broke the record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, surpassing the previous mark held by Chris Gayle. The youngster's rise has been remarkable. After impressing in his debut IPL season last year, he continued his dominance in youth cricket and capped it off with a stunning 175 in the U-19 World Cup final against England earlier this year. Despite doubts over whether he could replicate his success against better-prepared opponents in IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi silenced critics by taking on some of the world's best bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada.
He also smashed a century against Sunrisers Hyderabad and registered three scores above 90, including two crucial knocks in the playoffs, helping Rajasthan Royals remain competitive throughout the season. Speaking after announcing the squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted that Sooryavanshi's performances made his selection inevitable. "We all saw what he can do. Even in the playoffs, he almost single-handedly carried the Rajasthan Royals. For a young kid, I don't need to talk about how well he has been batting. We have high hopes from him; he has basically picked himself," Agarkar said.
Before making his much-anticipated senior India debut, Sooryavanshi is set to represent India A against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. With records already tumbling and expectations soaring, Indian cricket's newest prodigy now stands on the brink of the international stage.
