Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order creating a framework for government review of advanced artificial intelligence systems before they are released to the public. Under the policy, leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic can voluntarily provide federal agencies with access to their most powerful AI models for up to 30 days before launch. The move marks a significant shift in Washington’s approach to AI governance as concerns grow over the technology’s cybersecurity and national security implications.

The executive order establishes a voluntary review process under which federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Homeland Security, and Treasury, can evaluate frontier AI models for potential cyber risks and vulnerabilities before public deployment. The policy was reportedly influenced by concerns surrounding advanced AI systems capable of identifying weaknesses in critical infrastructure such as banking networks, hospitals, and government systems. The final version grants a 30-day review period, a compromise from an earlier proposal that would have allowed up to 90 days of government access.

The White House emphasized that participation remains voluntary and that the order does not create mandatory licensing, permitting, or pre-clearance requirements for AI developers. Supporters argue the measure strikes a balance between maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence and protecting critical infrastructure from emerging cyber threats.
