Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - President Donald Trump has revived allegations that China meddled in the 2020 US presidential election, calling it an unprecedented “election security nightmare.” Beijing has flatly rejected the claims, while US intelligence assessments and the courts continue to find no evidence of fraud that could have changed the outcome.
In a recent primetime address, Trump claimed that over a period beginning with the 2020 election cycle, China carried out “the largest compromise of election data in history,” allegedly acquiring around 220 million US voter files and even attempting to manufacture illegal ballots for Joe Biden. He framed this as proof that the 2020 contest was “rigged” and said he was declassifying documents to show that some US intelligence officials suppressed warnings about Chinese activity. Trump also repeated broader assertions about non‑citizens on voter rolls and systemic vulnerabilities in US election systems.
Chinese officials have responded by categorically denying any interference, saying Beijing “has never and will never” meddle in US presidential elections and accusing Washington of making groundless accusations for political reasons. Their stance is reinforced by an unclassified 2021 assessment from the US intelligence community, which found no indication that any foreign actor, including China, tried to alter or succeeded in altering technical aspects of the 2020 vote such as registrations, ballots, tabulations or results. More than 60 lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies after the election produced no ruling establishing fraud on a scale that could change the result, and recounts, audits, and reviews by his own Justice Department similarly failed to uncover outcome‑changing irregularities.
Trump’s new claims about Chinese interference in the 2020 election intensify political pressure on relations between Washington and Beijing, but they remain at odds with the conclusions of US intelligence agencies, courts, and official audits. With China rejecting the accusations and existing evidence failing to support them, the debate underscores how contested narratives about election integrity continue to shape US politics years after the vote.
