Three Dead, Over 60 Injured in Karachi Aerial Firing on Independence Day

Karachi witnessed multiple incidents of celebratory aerial firing during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations, resulting in three fatalities and more than 60 injuries. Police confirmed that the deceased include an elderly man and an eight-year-old girl, both struck by stray bullets in separate localities.

Authorities reported that gunfire incidents were recorded from various parts of the city late on August 14, shortly after midnight, as crowds gathered to mark the occasion. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where several remain under treatment. Doctors stated that some injured persons are in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials said they had deployed additional personnel across Karachi to maintain order during the national holiday. Despite repeated warnings and awareness campaigns against aerial firing, the practice remained widespread. Police have registered multiple cases and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify offenders.

Karachi’s administration expressed deep concern over the continued disregard for public safety during celebrations. Senior police officers urged citizens to celebrate responsibly, emphasising that celebratory gunfire is both illegal and life-threatening. “Every year, innocent lives are lost due to reckless acts. This must stop,” an official stated.

Authorities have appealed to community leaders, neighbourhood committees, and families to discourage such actions. The city’s health department also confirmed that government hospitals were on high alert throughout the night to handle the influx of patients.

The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of firearm laws and greater public awareness to prevent similar incidents in future national celebrations.
