The day after the Election Commission announced Bihar’s assembly poll schedule, talks over seat sharing between the two major alliances NDA and INDIA turned tense.
Within the NDA, the two dominant parties, JD(U) and BJP, were mostly aligned (reportedly to contest about 102 and 101 seats respectively) , but smaller allies began to demand more. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), previously offered around 20–22 seats, asked for an additional 15. Other allies such as Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party also staked claims (15 and 10 seats, respectively).
On the INDIA / Grand Alliance side, the Rashtriya Janata Dal is leading negotiations, offering the Congress only 50–52 seats—well below Congress’s demand of 70. The CPI(ML) also expressed unhappiness over its allotment of 20–25 seats, demanding up to 40. Meanwhile, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party has decided to contest independently and will announce its own candidates, possibly including Prasant Kishor himself.
