Hobart , Australia - A small act of kindness by a Tasmanian woman has grown into a worldwide symbol of compassion. After losing her mother and going through a divorce, she began sewing tiny fabric hearts as a way to cope with grief. Her goal was to make 1,000 hearts and give them to people in hospitals or those going through difficult times.
What began as a personal healing activity soon connected with people across the globe. Volunteers joined in, and the initiative, now known as “1000 Hearts,” has distributed more than a million handmade hearts to people facing illness, loss, or anxiety.
The hearts are made from simple materials, but they carry a powerful message—someone cares. Community workshops and donation packs help keep the effort going, with every piece stitched by hand. Supporters say the project has brought comfort not just to recipients, but also to those who make the hearts.
This grassroots movement shows how creativity and empathy can unite strangers and help people heal in ways words sometimes cannot.
