Desk Correspondent , Mumbai - Renowned author Taslima Nasreen has sparked a heated debate online after publicly criticizing music composer AR Rahman for recent remarks she labeled as "communal." Taking to social media on Tuesday, the author expressed her disappointment with the Oscar winner, suggesting that his focus on religious identity was unnecessary for an artist of his stature. Nasreen argued that true icons should transcend religious boundaries, especially in a diverse industry like Bollywood, where talent has historically outweighed sectarian affiliations.

To bolster her argument, Nasreen cited the examples of superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. She pointed out that both actors have maintained immense popularity across all communities in India for decades without "flaunting" their religious identities or making divisive statements. According to Nasreen, these actors serve as the gold standard for how public figures in India can be beloved by the entire nation through a secular and inclusive public persona. "AR Rahman is a great musician, but he should learn from the Khans how to remain a national icon without bringing religion into everything," her post suggested.

The author’s comments have divided fans and social media users. While some agree that artists should remain neutral, others have defended Rahman, noting that expressing one’s faith or identity is a personal right and does not necessarily equate to being communal. Rahman, who is known for his spiritual leanings and often incorporates diverse cultural themes into his music, has not yet officially responded to the author’s critique. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between personal expression and public expectations for India’s most influential cultural figures.
