Tarique Rahman is all set to take over the throne , What does that mean for India ?

Desk Correspondent , Dhaka - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, Tarique Rahman,
takes office as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. To make room for a new administration elected a few days ago, Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader, has announced his resignation.
"Let democracy continue to be practiced," Yunus, who has been in charge of the nation's
post-uprising transition since 2024, added.

Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique on his victory, describing it as an overwhelming outcome reflecting the public trust. Simultaneously, after the BNP won, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent flowers and sweets to Tarique Rahman as a way of
congratulating him. She also expressed her optimism for the continuation of strong and friendly relations between Bangladesh and India through a "shubhonandan" (congratulatory) post on X. But under the shade of such a high hope, what will the win of BNP actually look like to India?

Even though India was quite strict in its stance of not intervening in the Bangladeshi election and will be open to any party for bilateral ties, India was always sceptical regarding the probability of Jamaat winning the election. Jamaat's involvement with Pakistani intelligence and working as a
Pakistani shadow would have been a huge aspect of concern, but that doesn't make India's relationship with BNP hunky-dory. BNP has its own history of undercurrents with India.

During the regime of Khalida Zia, Bangladesh followed a more cynical approach towards India.
BNP's tilt towards Pakistan & China was quite evident during that time. Additionally, Indo-Bangladesh trade, like the Teesta water sharing, was more stagnant. Followed by the triumph of Tarique. BNP's historical uncertainty to this day lingers in the memories of the nation. Nevertheless, India is walking on eggshells, as the anxiety over renewed
China–Pakistan influence on Bangladesh is not a matter to forget.

Amid the election results of Bangladesh, the leader of the Awami League called the election unfair and biased. Awami League is believed to be one of the most remarkable political parties of  Bangladesh, with Sheikh Hasina being the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh before the student protest in 2024. Moreover, India always had a fairly strong bilateral tie with Bangladesh
during Sheikh Hasina's regime, with constant coordinated intelligence with India. But now, things are changing with leaps and bounds, hopefully for the best.

Recently, Hasan Mahmud, a leader of the Awami League, stated, "A neutral interim government should conduct the election. We are the target of revenge from this administration, which is
totally hostile to us.” "A level playing field for the Awami League will never be possible under this administration," he
continued. We do wish to take part in the election. Elections are how we always get into power. We think that humans are powerful.

Now, as the elections are over and Dhaka has its new king to rule, it's up to India and Bangladesh how things will turn out on both sides.
