Desk Correspondent , Chennai - The Legislative assembly election has officially commenced from 23 April, 2026. Millions of voters across Tamil Nadu queued outside polling stations today to cast their ballots in the high-stakes polls that could redefine the state’s political landscape. In the current polls Tamil Nadu holds 234 constituencies, commenced at 7:00 AM under stringent security, with over 5.73 crore eligible electors deciding the fate of 4,023 candidates. The election is primarily a three-cornered contest between the ruling Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s DMK; the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), spearheaded by Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s AIADMK; and a formidable third pole led by actor-politician Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Early reports indicate a brisk turnout, particularly in rural pockets, with the Election Commission recording an approximate turnout of 37.56% by 11:00 AM.
Chief Minister Stalin, seeking a second consecutive term, cast his vote early in Chennai, emphasizing a message of "continuity and Dravidian welfare." Meanwhile, AIADMK’s Palaniswami, voting in his home turf of Edappadi, expressed confidence in an "anti-incumbency wave." The entry of Vijay’s TVK has introduced a wildcard element, specifically targeting the youth and first-time voters, who number over 14 lakh this cycle.
Key battles to watch include Kolathur, where Stalin faces a multi-pronged challenge, and Tiruchirappalli East, one of the two seats contested by Vijay. To ensure a peaceful process, over 1.5 lakh security personnel have been deployed. Polling is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 PM, with the crucial counting of votes set for May 4, 2026. Election officials have designated the day a public holiday, urging a 100% turnout to uphold the state’s democratic legacy.
