Swara Bhasker Speaks Out on Bollywood Silence Over Wangchuk Protest

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Actor Swara Bhasker has questioned Bollywood's silence over Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike, saying many in the film industry are afraid to speak out. She added that the importance of a public movement should not depend on celebrity support.

Speaking at Jantar Mantar, Swara said the current political climate has made many actors hesitant to express their views, fearing consequences for speaking openly. Comparing the present situation with the 2011 Anna Hazare movement, she claimed the environment has changed significantly and accused the government of ignoring peaceful protests. However, she clarified that she does not blame individual actors for remaining silent, urging people not to rely on celebrities to validate important causes.

Explaining her support for Wangchuk, Swara said the protest is also about the future of India's students, including her own daughter. Despite losing around 9 kg and doctors warning that his health remains critical, Wangchuk has refused to end his fast and instead appealed to supporters to join a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20.

As concerns over Wangchuk's health continue to grow, the protest has sparked wider debate on education reforms and freedom of expression, drawing support from several actors, filmmakers and public figures across the country.
